DR.STARR'S HEALTH NEWSLETTER - FEBRUARY 2008

Hello patients and friends of Family Chiropractic.

We have some big news for Family Chiropractic. Our Registered Massage Therapist, Greta Starr, will be working full time at Family Chiropractic, beginning in March. She has been in big demand, so she will be adding Tuesdays 2pm to 7pm, and Wednesdays 12pm to 6pm, and will be working Tuesdays to Saturdays.

Also, some of you saw me this weekend at the Vancouver Wellness Show. I was there promoting Animal Chiropractic, and it was a big success. So many people out there were as excited as I was to hear about alternative & holistic healthcare options for their pets.

This month's newsletter is about Implementing an Exercise Program. Perhaps some of you made a resolution, or decided that you wanted 2009 to be a more active and healthy year. There are a few simple steps that may make this easier.

1. Have a Plan.
See full size image Keep it realistic, something that you can accomplish, and write it down. This is especially important for maintaining motivation. Your plan should include a schedule with days of week and time of day that you intend to exercise, as well as specific goals for what you want to accomplish.

2. Start Slowly.
I recommend starting a 20-30 minute program every other day for cardio. After that, if desired, you can increase your intensity, distance, or time by 10% weekly. This is very important for injury prevention. Remember - more is not always better. Better is better. In fact, your body can get more of a calorie-burning, metabolism-boosting workout from a short intense session of intervals than from a long cardio session. The 'no pain, no gain' principle does not apply here! Start slowly so that you will enjoy what you're doing and remain healthy.

3. Have Fun.
In order to stay motivated, make sure you find an exercise program you enjoy. There are so many different types of exercise out there, you shouldn't have a problem finding something you enjoy. Doing a group aerobics, spinning, or Yoga class can make it a social atmosphere as well as give you a sense of group motivation. There are many sports you can join as a beginning adult.

Stay healthy, and remember: the biggest compliment you can give me is to refer friends and family.
